Friends, Lovers, Strangers (a short story)

Devin loved Sam. He really did. He had plans of making her his wife. But he was at his wits end. Once again, Sam was upset with him. Once again she was giving him the silent treatment. And once again, he didn’t know why. He shook his head, unsure of how long this episode would last. The record so far: a week and a half.

He reflected back to their last conversation just two days ago. He searched through the archives of his mind hoping for some clue as to what warranted the sentence this time. The only thing that came to mind was: she asked him a question and he decided to have a little fun with her. He responded to her the way she had responded to him so many times in the past. He thought she would get a kick out of that.  Hmmmm. Could that be it? Could his playful gesture be the cause of his eviction notice from her arms? Naw, it couldn’t be…right?

In the past, Devin would send countless text messages, leave numerous voicemail messages, post song dedications and love quotes on social media, pace the floor and lose hours of sleep hoping and praying that she would respond. He just wanted her to talk to him. To tell him, what he did wrong? How can he make it right? But not this time…this time it was different for him. This time there were no countless text messages. No numerous voicemail messages. No song dedications or love quotes. No pacing the floor. And no losing hours of sleep. This time he knew for a fact that he did nothing wrong.

Devin wasn’t sure how it happened or even when. All he knew was that the same desperation he felt in the past had vaporized.  Whatever clicked on the inside, whatever caused the light bulb to turn on, opened Devin’s eyes to the evolution of his relationship with Sam…Friends, Lovers, Strangers.
